Recycled Products The Rethink Rubbish shopping list Stop adding to your stash of used plastic carrier bags – take your own re-usable bags, such as fabric bags or many supermarkets also offer ‘bags for life’. Alternatively, pack your shopping in a cardboard box. Buy loose items of fruit and veg, instead of their pre-packaged neighbours. Many supermarkets have recycling banks for paper, cans and glass on their car parks. Remember to drop off your household recyclables as part of your regular shopping trip. Find your nearest facility at www.recyclemore.co.uk Look out for goods that are packaged in recycled materials or have a high recycled content. Choose goods which are durable or are returnable or refillable. Many shops offer re-fills and many washing powder manufacturers produce re-fill packs. Try to avoid buying disposable items such as razors, tissues, etc and think about buying more durable items to replace them instead Buy in bulk and avoid the individual portion packs wherever possible, particularly as many convenience foods tend to come with two or three layers of packaging. Aluminium drink cans are worth money – it’s a good way to earn some extra spending money for yourself or there’s bound to be a local worthy cause or a school near you that is saving them and could benefit from the proceeds. And finally – Use your consumer power. Ask your local shops and supermarkets to stock recycled items.
