Rethink Rubbish in the home - hints and tips

  • Ditch cling film and foil and store food in re-sealable containers instead.

  • Buy milk in returnable bottles, instead of paper cartons.

  • Invest in rechargeable batteries to reduce rubbish and save cash.

  • Make recycling part of your weekly supermarket trip. Find out where your nearest facilities from the bank locator.

  • If your council has collects recycling from your doorstep – take advantage!

  • Choose re-useable varieties of goods such as nappies and hankies, rather than disposable ones. For information about re-usable nappies visit www.realnappy.com or call the National Association of Nappy Services on 0121 693 4949 for information about nappy laundry services in your area.

  • Give good quality magazines to your local doctor’s surgery for the waiting room.

  • Take unwanted clothes and household items to charity shops or jumble sales.

We keep three separate bins at home for used cans, bottles and paper, then drop them off at the local supermarket recycling banks when we ago shopping. It's really that easy! I'm a great believer that if everyone did a little, then it would go a long way to help the big problem of rubbish.
